How to Choose the Right Winter Coat: 5 Tips to Help You Find Your Perfect Match

If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to start the search for your new winter coat. Even though we’re coming to the end of the year, the cold weather is unfortunately here to stay a little longer, so it’s important to wrap up. But with so much choice, how can you find the best winter coat to suit you? From parkas to blazers to macs, there’s an endless amount of styles, colours and fits in the world of men’s winter coats, so it can be difficult to find your perfect match. Thankfully, we’ve put together a little guide on how you can pick the right one for you, with the help of some of our favourite Bellfield coats to give you a little inspiration.

1: Consider the Sizing

Generally, when you’re looking for outerwear, the rule is to go for a size bigger. What you don’t want to do though, is to go for a size that makes you look more like a pile of coats than a person wearing one. When you try on your coat, make sure that you allow plenty of room for jumpers and layering. If it feels a little too snug when you do, it might be worth going for a bigger size. If you’re not convinced a bigger size is the best option for you, why not go for an oversized style coat? ThisNamru Fur Trim Oversized Mountain Parka (£56) is a great choice and has plenty of room for you to layer up. It’s got plenty of padding, along with zip closure and storm flaps to give extra protection from the chill. There’s also roomy pockets plus a detachable faux fur hood to give a little extra luxury. Make a statement with this bold tomato shade, or if you prefer something a little more subtle, it’s also available in black or navy.

2: Look at the Big Picture

By this, we mean consider a coat that fits in with most of your wardrobe, and think about the times you’ll be wearing it. If you’re wearing it for work where you have a smart dress code, you’ll need a smart jacket to match. ThisBurroughs Double Breasted Blazer (£35) is not only a great addition to your workwear wardrobe, but it’s perfect for evening wear too. On the other hand, if you spend a lot of time outside, you’ll be wanting something waterproof with good insulation, like thisGallatin Padded Jacket (£45.50).Perfect for battling the elements, this puffer jacket is heavily padded and comes complete with a funnel neck, hood, and Velcro cuff fasteners, plus the ski-inspired design adds a bold touch of colour.

3: Prioritise Warmth

When it comes to winter coats, the clue is sort of in the name: winter. While you of course want to look your best, your priority really should be choosing something that’s going to keep you warm. Opt for something with plenty of insulation and ideally go for something with “winter features” such as:
  • Storm flaps - Wind can easily pass through zips, so storm flaps will prevent even the strongest winds from getting through.
  • Elasticated cuffs - Snug cuffs will give you extra protection from rain and snow.
  • Oversized fit - As we’ve already mentioned, provides you with plenty of room for layering.
One of our winter coats that fits these requirements is thisHorru Colour Block Mountain Puffer Jacket (£45.50).In addition to these winter essentials, there’s also plenty of extra features with this jacket too. The microfleece inner neck adds extra warmth, there’s an inner zip pocket to keep your valuables safe, and an earphone tab for convenience.

4: Think Long Term

Going with what’s on trend is great, but when it comes to buying a winter coat, you don’t want to invest in something that looks amazing this year and then is completely out of style. So, look at styles that are going to stand the test of time. Something that ticks this box is the traditional parka, such as thisRaka Sherpa Lined Parka (£35). The cosy Sherpa lining and cotton nylon blend will keep you protected from the elements, and it also features storm flaps, a concealed zip and multiple pockets. Alternatively, if parkas aren’t really your thing, how about a classic overcoat? We love thisTroupe Charcoal Check Overcoat (£52.50), which features a stylish Prince of Wales check pattern in this sleek charcoal grey shade. Created with a wool blend, this is a great choice if you’re looking for a smart winter coat that you can still wear every day.

5: Put Quality Over Cost

When buying a winter coat it’s easy to get into the mindset that you need to spend as little as possible. However, just because something is cheap it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good quality. If you want a coat that’s going to beat the chill and also last you a couple of years, you’re better off investing a little extra. Can you get the best of both worlds? While we don’t like to brag, here you can. At Bellfield, we have a great range of quality mens winter coats and jackets, and the best thing is that they’re super affordable. Created using premium fabrics, our range of winter coats for men has something to suit you, whatever your style.
